According to Catherine Tate, on this morning’s Jonathan Ross show on Radio 2, Season 4 could well be “David’s last series”.
Before all the fans of David Tennant (of which I am one) start hurling themselves from the top of the Millennium Stadium, I should point out that this is not really a surprise. He wasn’t going to stay forever, was he?
Having said that, just because this may be his last series doesn’t mean he won’t do the specials. Let’s be honest, I don’t think the production team would shoot themselves in the foot by casting a new Doctor for a series of sporadic specials. The poor sod wouldn’t get a proper chance to settle in with the viewer, which would be damaging for the “franchise”.
I think that, if Tate is right, Tennant will regenerate in the last special, ready for a new boy to take over in Series 5.
Having said that, it’s all speculation and may be a load of cobblers. But even if it IS true, Tennant has done wonders for the shows popularity and, in my view, is probably the single greatest thing to come out of New Doctor Who. A proper Doctor, properly played. He’ll have done 3 series as our hero, plus another 4 specials – and been the Doctor in the eyes of the public for four years, giving a consistency to the show that was sorely needed after Eccleston’s early departure.
