Doctor Who DVDs 2009
Posted: January 7, 2009 Filed under: Doctor Who, DVD 5 Comments »Recently reported in DWM and on GallifreyOne, the release schedule for this year is subject to change (of course) but will include a new colourised version of Planet of the Daleks.
Episode three of this Jon Pertwee story previously only existed in the BBC archive as a black and white film recording. However, using partly the same process recently used on an old episode of Dad’s Army (broadcast on BBC2 last month in colour for the first time in 39 years) using information contained in the film print, and partly artificial re-colouring in the United States, colour has been restored to the episode. The story will be released as a box set with Frontier in Space, which sees the Doctor meet the Draconians and features the last appearance of Roger Delgado as the Master.
Other stories due for release in 2009 are the swansong of the Second Doctor, The War Games, the Fourth Doctor stories The Deadly Assassin and Image of the Fendahl and the Seventh Doctor story Delta and the Bannermen (the first release so far from the 24th series)

Some interesting choices there. I wonder what they’ll fill the rest of the year with…?

Wow. Especially excited by Dalek War set and War Games – it’s overlong but has some brilliant bits in it. And we already knew about the E-Space Trilogy but that is cool as well!
Thanks for this. Means I can ‘reserve’ them on Lovefilm. (Sometimes I think I need to get out more!)
It’s a great line-up. Image of the Fendahl and The Deadly Assassin are favorites of mine, and I’ve never seen Frontier in Space, Planet of the Daleks, or The War Games.
There’s a great article up on the Restoration team website on the recolouring of episode 3 of Planet of the Daleks, with some stills showing the results of the two recolouring processes and how they’re combined into the final result. It looks pretty impressive: http://www.purpleville.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/rtwebsite/DalekWarDVD.htm
Mary, you and me both.
I keep meaning to get all of these into our Lovefiilm list, but I think my wife might leave me if I do.
Oh, THAT’s why I’ve never been able to find The Deadly Assassin on DVD. That’ll teach me to make assumptions based on the availability of The Invasion of Time.
