Show 60: Doctor Who – Spare Parts

Surprise!

To tie in with last weeks look back at The Tenth Planet (William Hartnell’s finale as The Doctor and the first appearance in the show of the Cybermen) we decided to follow this up with an extra show where we review Big Finish’s Tenth Planet prequel, Spare Parts

Taking place between Time-Flight and Arc of Infinity and on a dark frozen planet where no planet should be, in a doomed city with a sky of stone, the last denizens of Earth’s long-lost twin will pay any price to survive, even if the laser scalpels cost them their love and hate and humanity.

And in the mat-infested streets, round tea-time, the Doctor and Nyssa unearth a black market in second-hand body parts and run the gauntlet of augmented police and their augmented horses.

And just between the tramstop and the picturehouse, their worst suspicions are confirmed: the Cybermen have only just begun, and the Doctor will be, just as he always has been, their saviour…

As always you can subscribe via iTunes or download directly from here.

See you next week!

    Great show, guys.

I have to say I heard this earlier on this year, and I loved it too. I’m really glad you created a separate blog on these.

This episode really made me realise again, how much I loved Peter Davison’s Doctor. I started with Tom too, but Davison was my favourite prior to Tennant – yes, I think he’s great at it.

Question is, how long will it be before we get Eccleston and Tennant into the Big Finish fold?

    • Paul says:

      Thanks Gary.

It’s unlikely we’ll get any of the new Doctors appearing in character for Big Finish as their license only covers the Classic series (1963-96). The BBC are viewing the new stuff as a separate brand and I suspect that will only change when the show gets cancelled/rested again.

Given his past history/interviews/attitude I doubt very much that Eccleston will EVER become involved with the show again – unless his career is on the skids and he needs the money.

Tennant, of course, was in several Big Finish stories prior to becoming the Doctor:

UNIT: The Wasting (2005) as Colonel Brimmicombe-Wood
Dalek Empire III: Chapters 1-6 (2004) as Galanar
Doctor Who: Medicinal Purposes (2004) as Daft Jamie
Doctor Who Unbound: Exile (2003) as Time Lord #2/Pub Landlord
Doctor Who Unbound: Sympathy For The Devil (2003) as Colonel Brimmicombe-Wood
Doctor Who: Colditz (2001) as Feldwebel Kurtz

He also appeared as the titular character in BFs 3 disc audio dramatisation of The Adventures of Luther Arkwright.
