Ironically, given the subject matter of the series in our latest podcast, Hollywood has this film coming out next year. What a coincidence…

Thanks to the Twilight/True Blood generation of shows it’s becoming the norm these days to think of vampires as misunderstood and a bit cuddly, despite the whole neck/fangs/blood-drinking malarkey (Emo has SO much to answer for…).

That is BOLLOCKS! Vampires can be sexy by all means but, at the end of the day, they will KILL us to DRINK our BLOOD in order for them to survive. Remaining the UNDEAD for all eternity.

Bastards.

Anyway, Ultraviolet was written and directed by Joe Ahearne (This Life/Strange/Dalek/Father’s Day/Boom Town/Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways/Apparitions) in 1998 for Channel 4. Broadcast at 10pm on Thursday nights it gathered a dedicated following and achieved pretty good viewing figures. However C4 were slow on the uptake and failed to keep hold of the actors for a second series.

As a very British, modern take on vampires this strikes a stark contrast with the more comic-book style of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Curiously, years later, three of the main cast have becoming more internationally well known for their roles in American series. Idris Elba is now best known for playing Stringer Bell in The Wire, Jack Davenport is famous for the Pirates of the Caribbean films and is now starring in current hit FlashForward, while Stephen Moyer, having played a vampire here, is now playing lead bloodsucker in True Blood…

Although the DVD has now been deleted, most of the episodes can be found in their entirety on You Tube. To give you a flavour of what we’ve been watching, here’s a trailer. I think it’s fan made and some of the music is a bit OTT but it’s not bad at all!

Robbie Burns, John Logie Baird, Arthur Conan Doyle, Billy Connolly, David Tennant…um…Scotty from Star Trek…Mel Gibson and…er…Groundskeeper Willie?

Ohhh, famous Scotsmen, we’re just up to our eyes in those blokes aren’t we? (Aren’t we?). None perhaps as famous as James Robert McCrimmon though. And it is in this story that we welcome our favourite hairy legged highlander aboard the TARDIS.

It’s an odd one this – the last purely historical story until 1982’s Black Orchid – yet it’s a curiosity, placed where it is with a Doctor/actor who’s not quite settled into the part yet.

Daleks conquer and destroy! Daleks conquer and destroy!

Ah, I sometimes think those mutated misfits will terrorise the universe for the rest of Time…* Still, as long as Andrew isn’t the first successful Dalek duplicate (hey, it’s possible) we’re okay for the moment. And we have reached a momentous point in C2 and Doctor Who history; the first change of the shows leading man.

Unfortunately, only clips and telesnaps really exist of this 7 part story, so Patrick Troughton’s debut isn’t quite as eventful as it should be. Or is it?

Shall we teach you the folly of our words and demonstrate the power of the Daleks!?**

Now that the eagerly awaited Kamelion box set (The King’s Demons and Planet of Fire) has been delayed for unspecified ‘technical reasons’, various online retailers have listed January the 4th as the release date for the Peladon box set, to be followed on the 1st of February by the long-rumoured Myths and Legends collection. No details have been made available for this set as yet, however it is thought to contain the Third Doctor story The Time Monster, and the Fourth Doctor adventures Underworld and The Horns of Nimon.

Apparently, the Fourth Doctor story The Masque of Mandragora (one of my personal favourites) is scheduled for release one week later, on the 8th of February. The Seventh Doctor’s first story, Time and the Rani, is listed for release on the 1st of March.

And finally, fans of the new series will see a release of final episodes of David Tennant’s reign as the Doctor when The Specials are released on both DVD and BluRay on the 11th of January – no word yet whether this set will contain The Next Doctor.

Growwwllll. Time for a glimpse of a forgotten early-90s piece of gory British horror-fantasy. She-Wolf of London was an HTV co-production with Universal. It had a troubled production history, with HTV pulling out 20 episodes in after the ITV head honchos refused to broadcast any earlier than 11pm due the violence and gore which, in these more enlightened times, seems utterly preposterous…

So chain yourselves in the basement and don’t listen on a full moon. God knows what secrets some of you lot are hiding!

As we reported late on Saturday, Red Dwarf fans attending this year’s Dimension Jump convention in Birmingham at the weekend were treated to a special announcement on Saturday. Doug Naylor sent an email message via associate producer Andrew Ellard, to announce that digital channel Dave have commissioned six new episodes of the series, to be broadcast late next year.

Despite a mixed reception, the Easter special Back To Earth was a huge ratings success for Dave, and it’s thought that this – along with sales of the DVD – that led to the commissioning of this new series.

Ellard revealed that, dependent on budget, the possibility exists that more than six episodes will be made. It was hinted that the new episodes could well be filmed in front of a live audience, as in the majority of previous series. He also reminded everyone that the fabled “series nine” referred to in Back To Earth had turned out to be nothing more than a hallucination, implying that any new series would be officially referred to as the ninth.

Actor Robert Llewellyn subsequently posted on his Twitter page that everything was at an early stage, with no firm details beyond the fact that the green light has been given to start putting scripts together.

An announcement has been made at this years Dimension Jump convention.  Apparently, Series Ten of Red Dwarf has been commissioned.  There is no word as to who it is being made for, but it would be fair to assume that it is for satellite/cable station Dave.  They are looking to film next year; at this stage the only work that is going on is on the scripts.  Again, no word on who the writers are, but as Grant/Naylor appear to have have settled their differences, we might even see both of them involved.  It’s gonna be a lot of fun finding out!
